Millendreath Beach Resort is situated roughly 3 miles (a 7 minute drive) from the nearby fishing town of Looe in the South East of Cornwall. It has a small family-friendly beach with water sports, an onsite bistro and in the summer months a beach bar. If you are looking for a little home from home, they have a small shop and a launderette.
For full disclosure, we stayed in April 2018. At the time, was named Black Rock Resort. We booked via Hoseasons as the company I worked for at the time offered discounts.
What did we think of Millendreath Beach Resort?
We are not strangers to Millendreath, the villas or the beach. My husband spent every summer of his childhood enjoying everything it had to offer. Though it was, of course, a very different experience back then.
So, when the venue confirmed that villas were going to be available for short term holiday lets, we couldn’t wait to try them out. We booked a Hillside Apartment 2B with a side sea view (they all are pretty much).
Our first impressions…
Our first impressions were a little mixed! We thought check-in smooth, and at the time parking was free for onsite guests as long as you displayed a voucher in the car windscreen. However, you can’t park up near the villas. You have to unload and drive back down to the central car park.
We found this a little frustrating especially as other guests parked up near the villas which made it hard to unload. I know there are different rules for the owners, but these were guests displaying the voucher! So, as I said a little mixed on arrival.
Impressions of the villa were awe-inspiring. It was clean, smart and looked brand new. They even supplied an essentials pack which included dishwasher tablets, cloths and cleaning products which I thought was a lovely touch.
The rooms were of average size and had a double bed and a set of bunk beds and a large open plan sitting room. Villas included a large flat-screen TV and WIFI which is often unheard of in holiday resorts and went down a treat with our daughter.
The Local Area
Millendreath Beach Resort has added more facilities since our visit. Unfortunately, I will be unable to comment on updates. The Bistro on the beach was somewhere we didn’t feel our children would eat comfortably in so ate in the villa for most of our trip. However it looked very in tune with the local area.
Heading to nearby Looe for an evening stroll is a must. I recommend you check out The Coddy Shack. It is a great fish and chip shop/restaurant located on the way to Looe.
During our stay we decided to walk the cliff path one afternoon to Looe. It takes about 30-40 minutes, but it’s not for the faint-hearted or those with mobility issues. It wasn’t easy, but the view at the top was worth it.
Although it is a family-friendly resort, it is very much for families who love water sports, being near the beach or just exploring. There are no parks, swimming pools, entertainment complexes, arcades or activities. However, it is an excellent base to explore nearby Looe or further afield. We are the type of family who explores, we use it as a base more than hanging around the facilities.
What I would love to see at Millendreath Beach Resort
We enjoyed our stay at Millendreath Beach resort; it is somewhere we prefer for more of a quiet spring break rather than a full week in the summer. I would love to see the facilities grow, perhaps a play park for the kids and a swimming pool.
Some improvements needed?
I couldn’t write an honest review without mentioning finding the burnt-out microwave. We didn’t use it anyway but it smelt funny! The fitted sheet was too small for the bed, so it kept flipping off! I woke up every morning lying on the bare mattress. Had we been their longer than three nights, I would have raised it with reception but didn’t want the hassle.
Overall thoughts on Millendreath Beach Resort
It was nice to get away for a long weekend. The beach resort was budget-friendly and within a reasonable distance from Looe. It offered great value for money and who can argue with free WIFI to keep the kids happy? Plus a lovely sea view.
